HISTORY

The St. George Stake was formed on November 7, 1869 out of the Southern Utah Mission. It was the ninth stake organized since the arrival of the pioneers in Utah in 1847. Joseph W. Young, who had been the Assistant to the President of the Southern Utah Mission, was set apart at the Stake President.

On April 18, 1877, the Kanab Stake was split off of the St. George Stake as part of a general ecclesiastical reorganization in the Utah Territory.

On June 9, 1912, the Moapa Stake (later renamed the Logandale Nevada Stake) was split off of the St. George Stake.

On December 8, 1929, the Zion Park Stake (later renamed the Hurricane Utah Stake) was split off of the St. George Stake. The Leeds Ward remained in the St. George Stake and everything east of there went to the Zion Park Stake.

On December 15, 1940, the Uvada Stake (later renamed the Enterprise Utah Stake) was split off of the St. George Stake.

As of December 20, 1940, the St. George Stake was made up of the Central Ward, Gunlock Ward, Ivins Ward, Leeds Ward, Mt. Trumbull Ward, Pine Valley Ward, Santa Clara Ward, St. George East Ward, St. George Center Ward, St. George South Ward, St. George West Ward, Veyo Ward, Washington Ward, and the Shivwits Indian Branch.

On February 5, 1961, the St. George East Stake was split off of the St. George Stake.

A church-wide policy that went into effect on February 1, 1974 to name stakes with a city name followed by a state name. As a result, the St. George Stake was renamed the St. George Utah Stake.

On March 5, 1978, the St. George Utah West Stake was split off of the St. George Stake.
