In 1879, Father Lawrence Scanlan established the St. John's Catholic Church, the Silver Reef Hospital, and St. Mary's School in Silver Reef.Father Scanlan worked side-by-side with the construction workers to make his dream become a reality.
St. Mary's School opened on September 1, 1979. It was staffed by the Sisters of the Holy Cross from Indiana. Children of all faiths attended this school.
