JESSE WENTWORTH CROSBY

BIOGRAPHY
Jesse Wentworth Crosby was born in Yarmouth, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, Canada on November 25, 1820.Jessie married his first wife, Hannah Elida Baldwin, in Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois on November 23, 1845.
In the summer of 1847, Jessie & Hannah and their infant son crossed the plains to the Valley of the Great Salt Lake, arriving on September 24, 1847.
At the October conference in 1861, Jesse was called with the original group of pioneers to go help settle St. George. He initially took his two oldest sons. In the spring of 1862, he went back to Salt Lake City and brought his wife, Hannah Elida Baldwin Crosby, and the rest of his family back to St. George.
Jesse was assigned Lot 5 of Block 11 on Plat A. There he built s small rock house, one of the first in the city. Later he built a large expansion on the front.
He was a Mormon preacher who filled five missions for the church, although he had to leave his family and struggle in a harsh country. He farmed, freighted between St. George and California, and made molasses called "dixie sorghum".
Jesse moved to Overton on the Muddy in 1882.
Jesse died on June 11, 1893 during a visit to Panguitch, Garfield County, Utah Territory. His funeral was held on June 14. He is buried in Plot A_B_13_5 of the St. George City Cemetery.
Hannah died at her home in St. George on May 2, 1907.
