BIOGRAPHYHyrum Wayne Smith was born on October 16, 1943 in Centerville, Utah.Hyrum served a mission in London, England. After that, he was drafted an served in the U. S. Army as field commander of a Pershing missile battery in Germany. While on leave from the Army in 1966, Hyrum married Gail Cooper. She was a graduate of Dixie State College. Hyrum graduated from Brigham Young University in 1971 and later in life received three honorary doctorate degrees. In 1981, he formed Golden Eagle Motivation to provide training in sales management. Hyrum was one of the creators of the Franklin Day Planner. He developed the planner in his basement, using loose-leaf pages to organize appointments, tasks, and notes based on a time-management system he developed. Hyrum founded the Franklin Quest Company in 1983. It manufactured day planners and conducted seminars in time management and productivity based on Smith's principles. The company went public in 1992 In 1997, the Franklin Quest Company merged with Stephen R. Covey's Covey Leadership Center to form the Franklin Covey Company. Hyrum was the Vice Chairman of the Franklin Covey Company until he retired in 2004. Hyrum and Gail retired to their 22-acre ranch in Gunlock. Hyrum served as a mission president in California. Hyrum spent his later years lecturing and in philanthropy. He played significant roles in the development of Tuacahn and Dixie State College. Hyrum died on November 18, 2019 several months after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. His funeral will be held at noon on December 3 in the Ivins Stake Center, 260 East 1060 South in Ivins.
