It was referred to in early records as a "rather pretentious home", probably due to the fact that John Mathis was a carpenter and his family was fairly well-off in Switzerland.The large living room and dining room area served as the first dance floor in St. George. HISTORYThis house was built by John Mathis soon after he arrived is St. George in 1861. It was popular for entertainment and social activities of the time.John's son, Wallace, obtained the house and raised his family there. The house was added to and modernized over time, being kept in mint condition. Owners: John Mathis Wallace B. Mathis Matt & Angie Mortenson BIOGRAPHYJohn Mathis was born in Zurich Switzerland in 1832. He was a carpenter and farmer. He assisted in building many of the first buildings in St. George.Wallace B.
