EAST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

MISCELLANEOUS MEMORIES
Because I was in the East Elementary first graduating class, I have a special fondness for that school. My top
four memories include; the May Day Program and braiding the May Pole. Having a movable desk for the first time,
prior to East Elementary, we had desks that were in stationary rows attached on both sides to long pieces of wood
that were anchored to the floor. Our classes doubled up for music. Our music teacher had us copy the words to
each song in a notebook. I still have my Music Notebook! Of course, graduation was the highlight. It made us feel
so grown-up to be dressed-up and honored. We all felt special to be the first graduates.

My third grade teacher was Ruth Miles. My fourth grade teacher was Virginia Boyack and my fifth grade teacher
was Mr. Owen Hughes. I loved recess because my teacher came outside and played with us. My favorite game
was prisoners' base, then kick ball. I looked forward to the yearly track meet and May Day Program. Braiding the
Maypole was a big event and after watching it done year after year it was fun to be in fifth grade and be the one
doing it. I lived just a block from the school and so I always went home for lunch, but I was never late returning
because Mrs. Boyack always read to us right after lunch and the books she read were so interesting I could
hardly wait to hear her. One year I won the school hopscotch tournament. I really loved school, especially
East Elementary.   --   Geri Blake Thode   (1955-1956, 1956-1957, 1957-1958)
