(early pioneer of Washington)

BIOGRAPHY

Samuel Jefferson Adair was born on March 28, 1806 in Laurens, Laurens County, South Carolina.

Jemima Catherine Mangum was born on September 14, 1809 in Lebanon, Meigs County, Ohio.

Anne Catherine Lauritsen was born on July 2, 1815 in Denmark.

Samuel and his family crossed the plains with the Benjamin Gardner Company in 1852.

After arriving in Utah, the Adair and Mangum families, who were very close, settled in the Payson-Nephi area. While living there, they were called my Brigham Young to settle the southwest part of the territory and to grow cotton. Being southerners, they had grown cotton or at least seen it grown.

Samuel was the leader of a group of ten southern families. They left Payson in March of 1857 and arrived at their destination on April 15. Them explored the area and in May met up with the Covington group what is now called Adair Spring. They laid out a town and called it Washington after President George Wasington. They called the area Dixie after their southern homeland.

Samuel and his family lived in Washington for 20 years. They owned six lots of land in Block 35 and built their homes there.

Samuel married Anne on October 22, 1864 in Salt Lake City. She had been married to Peter Adsersen previously, but he died in Denmark in 1864.

Later in life, Samuel moved to Nutrioso, Arizona to settle that area.

Anne died on January 7, 1884 in Saint Johns, Apache County, Arizona and was buried in the Saint Johns Cemetery.
