RICHARD HARRISON
(iron moulder, farmer, and legislator)
BIOGRAPHY
Richard Harrison was born March 8, 1808 in Worcestershire, England.He married Mary Ann Whitaker on September 10, 1836 in England.
Richard was an iron moulder by trade in Liverpool, England. Shortly after being baptized in 1842, the couple left for America and settled in Nauvoo, Illinois.
In 1849, they headed west with other saints. When iron and coal deposits were found in Southern Utah, the Harrison's were one of 11 families sent to build a town near the deposits.
In 1852 Brigham Young organized the iron company and Richard was chosen as superintendent.
In 1854 Richard was elected a representative of the State Legislature. While serving there, Brigham Young asked him to marry a young widow ??? with two children. Jane Fryer was born September 7, 1823 in Hampshire, England and married Francis Jorden on October 24, 1841. Richard married Jane on February 25, 1855 in Salt Lake City.
Upon their return home, Richard moved his family to Pinto, where he built a four room log house with a wall down the middle. Each wife had two rooms for themselves and their 10 children, which included the two step children.
Richard made a living on his farm and by running the Pinto post office. He remained there the rest of his life.
Jane died March 18, 1896 in Pinto.
She was buried on March 20 in the Pinto Cemetery.
Mary Ann died September 4, 1898 in Pinto.
She is buried in the Pinto Cemetery.
Richard died March 4, 1882 in Pinto.
He is buried in the Pinto Cemetery.
