THE RESCUED MUSTANG

by Jim Kemple

In April of 1949, Iliff Andrus of St. George caught a mustang colt on the Arizona Strip. The colt was barely alive. It was a very severe winter and many of the wild horses starved or froze to death.

Andrus gave the colt to my brother, Clifford Kemple. Clifford brought the horse home, fed it, took care of it until it was healthy enough to "break to ride".

The "before" picture was taken in April after first getting the horse. The "after" picture shows Clifford and his horse in August after some care. These photos were taken at our home on 500 North in St. George.
