BIOGRAPHYJohn Fredrich Steele was born March 21, 1821 in Hollywood, Ireland.Jane Catherine Campbell (went by Catherine) was born November 16, 1816 in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. John married Catherine on January 1, 1840 in Belfast, Antrim, Ireland. John investigated the Mormon faith and was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in April of 1843. Catherine was baptized about a month later. The Steele family emigrated to the United States in 1845. From Nauvoo, Illinois, they traveled to Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1846. John joined the Mormon Battalion and headed west with his family. At Santa Fe, New Mexico Territory, they joined a group heading to Salt Lake. They joined the other new arrivals in Salt Lake City on July 29, 1847. Young Elizabeth was born to them on August 9, 1847, becoming the first white child born in the Utah Territory, The Steele family settled in Toquerville in 1862. Catherine died in Toquerville on June 15, 1891 and was buried in Plot 09-19-03 of the Parowan City (Kane County) Cemetery. John died on December 31, 1903 in Kanarraville (Kane County) and was buried in Plot 09-19-04 of the Parowan City (Kane County) Cemetery. FAMILY
