JAMES GILMER WILDER

BIOGRAPHY
James Gilmer Wilder was born February 27, 1851 in Cuba. His father (who was born in Jamaica) was a government engineer stationed in Cuba.In 1870, James was a student living in San Francisco.
By 1880, James was married and living in Bingham, Salt Lake County, Utah Territory, with his wife Annette Hanson. He was working as an attorney and was public notary and justice of the peace. He was involved in politics with the Liberal Party.
James moved to St. George in 1888. He served as an election judge, deputy registrar for elections, and census enumerator for Silver Reef. He homesteaded land in Washington County.
He married Lizzie Amelia Nicholls and they had seven children, all born at Silver Reef.
In 1896, James sent a lot of ore samples from the new gold strike at Grapevine Springs (near Leeds) to Dan Gurnsey of Salt Lake City.
Will O. Harris and his sons, along with August Hughes and James Wilder, developed a mining camp in the Bull Valley mountains. The Black Tiger ledge on Slaughter Creek produced gold and silver which they shipped up the road to the railhead at Modena.
On the 1900 census, James was a silver miner, living with his wife and six children in Leeds. O. E. Hamblin discovered copper close to the famous old Woolley-Lund-Judd lead-silver bonanza (which was abandoned). James took hold of that property and ran a tunnel to cut the formation at depth. He encountered a small ledge of rich ore.
James died January 25, 1907 in St. George and was buried January 26, 1907 in the Leeds Cemetery.
Lizzie died April 17, 1958 in Lovell, Big Horn County, Wyoming and was buried in the cemetery there.
