BIOGRAPHY
George Woodward was born in Cream Ridge, Monmouth County, New Jersey on September 9, 1817.
George & Thomazine were married in Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois on August 14, 1842. Thomazine
Downing was born in Uwchlan Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania on December 10, 1814.
George & Thomazine crossed the plains in the first company of pioneers, arriving in the Valley of the
Great Salt Lake on July 24, 1847.
George & Mary Ann were married in Salt Lake City on March 22, 1857. Mary Ann Wallace was born in Erie,
Pennsylvania on November 17, 1841.
George enlisted in the U. S. Army on September 20, 1861 and served in the Civil War. He mustered out on
April 21, 1862.
George & Mary Ann (and Thomazine?) moved down to St. George in the summer of 1871 (1861?).
Mary Ann died in St. George on May 14, 1898 and was buried in Plot A_D_76_6 of the the
St. George City Cemetery.
George served as chairman of the school board during the construction of what became the Woodward School
(named in his honor). He donated a substantial sum of money ($3,000) for the hardware and glass. Then he
bought the heating plant and the school's first piano.
George died in St. George on December 17, 1902 and was buried in Plot A_D_76_1 of the
St. George City Cemetery.
Thomazine died in St. George on September 9, 1904 and was buried on September 11 in Plot A_D_76_2
of the St. George City Cemetery.
