BIOGRAPHYDar Larson Smith was born in Henrieville, Garfield County, Utah on February 27, 1931. From 1937 to 1948 heattended elementary school in Henrieville, middle school in Antimony, and high school in Tropic. Helen Jolley was born in Provo, Utah County, Utah on July 19, 1933. She grew up in Bryce Valley, Utah. Dar attended Dixie Junior College in St. George from 1948 to 1951, graduating with an Associate BS Degree. While there he submitted his paperwork to become a full time missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. But due to the Korean War, his mission plans were put on hold. Dar was drafted and joined the U.S. Army in September of 1951. He served honorably at Fort Douglas UT, Fort Lewis WA, Camp Roberts CA, Fort Holabird MD, Camp Tokyo in Japan, and Camp Stoneman CA. In the fall of 1953, Dar enrolled in BYU where in 1956 he completed his BS Degree. While at BYU, Dar became reacquainted with Helen Jolley and they were married in the St. George Temple on September 17, 1954. Dar & Helen started their family in Bryce Valley where they were both educators at Bryce Valley School. During the 1959-1960 school year, Dar took a leave of absence from teaching and returned to BYU where he earned a MEd Degree in Educational Administration. After teaching in Tropic for 10 years, in 1967 Dar accepted a position as Principal of East Elementary School in St. George. The Smith's moved there and remained the rest of their lives. Dar retired from East Elementary on July 1, 1988. Dar served in local service organizations including the Kiwanis and Lions Clubs. He served the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in many callings including Bishop, High Counselor, Bishopric Counselor, Teacher, Scoutmaster, and Temple Worker. During retirement he was finally able to fulfill his dream of serving a mission, serving with Helen in Wellington, New Zealand. They also served local missions at the newly built Deseret Industries and Member Relocation Services. Family was very important to Dar and led him to become very involved with family history. He authored and published three books on his and Helen's family history. He was an eloquent writer and loved to keep a personal journal. Before computers came along, he could always be found writing in his journals by hand or typing letters on his old manual typewriter. He and LaRee Jones led an effort to compile the history of East Elementary School, resulting in the East Elementary School section of this Washington County Historical Society website. Helen died in St. George on March 30, 2020 and was buried in the Henrieville Cemetery. Dar died in St. George on June 23, 2020 and was buried in the Henrieville Cemetery. FAMILY
