A FEW MEMORIES OF WOODWARD AND DIXIE

by Keith W. Reichmann, Dixie High School Class of 1955

Once in Mr. Art Paxman's science class he wanted to extract chlorophyll from a leaf. He couldn't find the correct solvent so he tried using alcohol over a small open flame. ( He warned us to never do that.) suddenly the front of the room was a mass of flames. Some of us went out the door while others went out the windows. The fire was more spectacular than damaging. The only real damage was that Mr. Paxman's roll book was destroyed. Sometime later Grey Larkin confided that he had thrown the roll book into the fire as he left the room. Later that afternoon the firemen were back. The wooden trash bins next to the wooden tennis courts were both on fire. Any connection?

While at Woodward and Dixie I had many wonderful friends - classmates, other students, and even some faculty. By the time I got to Dixie it was obvious that I had no athlete or musical talent so I turned to school plays. I really enjoyed them and the traveling around to perform in other towns. A wonderful cast and I even took a one-act–play to Provo to state competition.

As the years have passed and our friends and life experiences have come and gone, one person at Dixie has proven to have made a great impact on my life. None of us can guess how many times I have silently thanked Miss Myrtle Henderson for all the time and effort she gave to this secretly shy and introverted knucklehead who still hates crowds and shies away from strangers.
