Stanley attended Dixie High School and Dixie College before going to Brigham Young University as a music major. After graduating, he went back for a year of graduate study. Stan started teaching at Woodward Junior High School in 1940. He taught for two years before being drafted shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Schmutz entered the Army Air Corps on August 7, 1942 at Fort Douglas, Utah. On August 7, 1944, 2 Lt. Schmutz was a bombardier on a B-17G "Flying Fortress" based at Lucera, Italy. This was his 18th mission. Their assignment was to bomb the Blechhammer Oil Refineries at Breslau, Germany (now Poland). As they arrived over the target, they were hit by flak and lost one engine. They turned back but gradually lost altitude until crash landing in a corn field. Lt. Schmutz was captured by several armed farmer and turned over to the local police. The German military took custody and placed him in a Budapest prison. Schmutz and the co-pilot were taken to Stalag Luft III, then later to Marlag-Milag where British POWS were being held. They were POWs for almost a year until the war's end. After discharge from the service, Stan taught band and chorus at Woodward Junior High School for 34 more years. He was loved and respected by his students at the school. He was known as Mr. Schmutz and "Stan the man". He loved his students and enjoyed his teaching time very much. He retired in 1978. Stan played in the "Undixieland Band" aka "4th of July Band". Stan died on October 5, 2008 in St. George. He was buried in Plot L-5-11 of the St. George Cemetery. FAMILY
