WCHS ORAL HISTORIES

THE WCHS ORAL HISTORY PROGRAM

As the population of Washington County continues to grow and diversify, there is a growing need to capture the history of and interpret the voices and memories of people associated with religions, business, government and the culture of this county.

By conducting oral history interviews, transcribing and posting these transcribed and videotaped interviews on the WCHS website, and/or YouTube, the Washington County Library Special Collections Archives, Utah State Historical Society, and Utah Tech University Special Collections Archives, we are preserving the history of Washington County for the benefit of future generations.

The mission of the WCHS is to coordinate and support countywide efforts between historical cultural institutions and the people of the community. It is the belief of those directly involved with this WCHS Oral History Project that we preserve the voices of these various historical voices within Washington County for current and future residents of Washington County to supplement the traditional archive, by bringing hidden voices within the county to light, adding texture and nuance to history, and literally giving individuals and communities the microphone to tell their own stories.

As of Jan. 6, 2026, 27 oral histories have been completed by WCHS Oral History Coordinator Loren Webb, with assistance from WCHS Board members Richard Kohler and Jesse Stocking, since 2021 when the program first began. Over the years, the program has been funded by Utah Humanities, St. George Recreation, Arts and Parks Tax and the Washington County Recreation, Arts and Parks Tax.
