BIOGRAPHYDouglas LaVan Martineau (went by LaVan) was born in Kanab, Utah on January 3, 1932. He was orphaned at a young age and was taken in by a Paiute man by the name of Edrick Bushhead and was raised as a Paiute.LaVan married Doris Dorene Kanosh on December 8, 1954 in Manti, Utah, She was from the Koosharem Band of Paiutes. On September 22, 1958, she and her third child died due to a medical mistake during childbirth. They were buried in Plot A.36.07.04A of the Richfield City Cemetery. Four years later, he married Evalina McFee of the Shivwits Band of Paiutes and they lived in St. George. Seven years later, they divorced but remained friends. LaVan served in the US Air Force from 1951 to November 1959. After getting out of the service, LaVan studied Indian rock art and became an expert on the subject. He published some of his work and more is yet to be published. LaVan died of cancer on February 26, 2000 and was buried in the Shivwits Cemetery. FAMILY
