HUGH MOON
(one of the original St. George pioneers)
BIOGRAPHY
Hugh Moon was born in Eccleston, Lancashire, England on August 5, 1815.Hugh was baptized and confirmed a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
on January 1, 1837.
Hugh sailed on the Brittania from Liverpool England to New York in America, May 30 to July 17, 1840.
Hugh married Maria Emeline Moot in Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois on August 4, 1846.
The Moon family traveled to Salt Lake City from July 3 to October 19, 1848.
Hugh was married to two plural wives, Jenet (Jannett?) Nicol and Elizabeth Kemmish, by Brigham Young
in Salt Lake City on June 11, 1854.
Hugh was called to go with his family to the Cotton Mission in Utah's Dixie. Their entourage left on November 7,
1861 with five wagons, twelve yoke of oxen, four cows, one pony and two horses. The party included wives,
Jenet and Elizabeth, ten children, a hired girl by the name of Ester Barnes, and five men as teamsters, Samuel
I. Burgess, John Mudd, Richard Hawkins, John Pilling, and William M. Mellon. They arrived in Washington and
St. George on December 4, 1861 or very shortly thereafter.
They lived in St. George for five years. The family suffered much, all for the Gospel sake, but almost starved
to death. Hugh was sick nearly all the time. He was not able to attend to the wants of his family.
So Hugh left Dixie on June 11, 1866. He returned to Salt Lake, arriving on June 23. He sold out all his
improvements there, but left his cattle with Sam Burgess. On December 7, he left Salt Lake with Elizabeth's
family for their farm in Farmington. On March 20, 1868, Hugh went back to Salt Lake City to bring Jenet's family
to the farm to live.
On April 12, 1870, Hugh went north to see the country of Malad, a distance of 90 miles. He bought a farm of
Josiah D. Price for eleven hundred dollars. On May 5, he moved Jenet and her children up there.
Hugh died in Henderson Creek, Oneida County, Idaho on September 23, 1870 and was buried on
September 26 in John Well's Field, Portage, Box Elder County, Utah.
