BIOGRAPHYGlade Syphus Wittwer was born in St. George on March 10, 1922.Glade was raised by the Tobler family. Glade met Phyllis Lightner who was born in St. George on May 27, 1923. Glade joined the Utah National Guard. He was called to active service in April of 1941 and was sent to Camp San Luis Obispo to start his service. He served in the Eastern Theater of Operations as a combat engineer. Glade wrote over 630 letters to Phyllis during that time, and she saved most of them. Their son, Glade "Witt" Wittwer Jr., found the letters when he was clearing the estate and some of them are referenced below. Glade and Phyllis were married in Brownwood, Texas on September 26, 1942. Glade died in Fort Belvoir on March 31, 2012 and was buried in Artlington National Cemetery. Phyllis died in the Fort Belvoir Hospital on December 30, 2014 and was buried in Artlington National Cemetery. FAMILY
