BIOGRAPHY
Augustus Poore Hardy was born in Georgetown, Essex County, Massachusetts on March 2, 1831.
Elizabeth Ann Carpener was born in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, New York on May 23, 1837.
Augustus Poore Hardy ("Gus") was a famous frontiersman
who was called by Brigham Young to areas
which needed his particular brand of fearlessness and bravery.
It has been said that he brought the first cotton seed to Utah's Dixie.
Augustus married Elizabeth in Salt Lake City on March 18,1854.
In November 1877, he became sheriff of Washington County.
This was a dangerous job, for Silver Reef was in full bloom, and with it came all the problems of a boomtown.
In St. George, his special mission was to work with the Indians.
In this he was very successful, for he quickly learned their language and was able to act
as their interpreter in dealing with church or civic authorities.
He served as sheriff until August of 1883.
Augustus died December 23, 1912 in St George and was buried on December 24 in Plot A_A_32_2_NH
of the St. George City Cemetery.
Elizabeth died in St. George on November 15, 1918 and was buried on November 17 in Plot A-A-32-2-SH
of the St. George City Cemetery.
