William & Rachel Atkin owned about 160 acres south of St. George (in what became known as Atkinville). There they built a large limestone home. In its heyday, Atkinville was comprised of three limestone homes for Atkin family members. The James Jepson Jr. home om Virgin, Utah is constructed of limestone. The limestone for the Tabernacle's three foot thick basement walls was hand quarried and hauled from the foothills northeast of the city. The Pine Valley Chapel was constructed of local pine and set on a foundation of granite and red limestone. The Santa Clara Tithing Granary has two levels with foot-thick limestone walls laid in a random ashlar pattern. PHOTOSTBDREFERENCESWikipedia entry for Limestone |
