Hafen as manager.Hafen bought out the other stockholders and ran the store with his wife, Susetta. The store was a room in their house. The business grew, so in 1900 a small brick building was constructed adjoining the home on the west. John G. Hafen retired in 1917 and sold the store to his son, Adolph Hafen along with Jessie ??? and Guy ???. Back in those days, it was the only store in town. In 1928, a larger modern building of cement brick and adobe was built just west of Adolph's home and a block west of the old store. The new store was called the Santa Clara Coop. Horace & Ethel Hafen McArthur (Ethel is Adolph's daughter) took over the store on September 1, 1945. They renamed it McArthur's Santa Clara Merc. In 1960, Horace & Ethel's son, Douglas, was made manager because Horace became the Washington County Treasurer. On July 1, 1986, the McArthurs sold the store and home to Island Markets Inc. out of Salt Lake City. PHOTOSTBDREFERENCESA Brief History of the Santa Clara MercBy Ethel H. McArthur |
