Captain John D. L. Pearce was a noted military leader and Indian fighter from St. George.
He took part in the Black Hawk War
and other Indian conflicts in southern Utah.
BIOGRAPHY
Capt. John D.L. Pearce led a cavalry troop that was charged with protecting Dixie settlements
from Indian raids during the Black Hawk War
from 1865 to 1868.
He built a fort along a
wash used by Navajo Indians to raid southern Utah.
As many as 20-30 men at a time worked on or guarded the fort.
