HISTORY

This home was built by George F. Whitehead.

The plaque out front says this was built in 1876 by Arthur Miles, but he wasn't born until 1866, and would only have been 10 years old. Assessor records show that Miles bought the property in 1891 when he was 25. In a 1992 Spectrum article, Barbara Greene said he built the house in 1893. That makes sense.

The original house appears to have been a cross-wing type, which was popular in Utah from 1880 to 1910. The living room was probably been used as the main hall or drawing room. It had two bedrooms and two bathrooms upstairs. There was a granary in the back.

Utah Heritage Foundation (now Preservation Utah) holds a Preservation Easement on the facade and inspects it annually to insure it is maintained in good condition as rehabbed.

Miles' daughter, Katherine, inherited the home when her mother died in 1951 and resided there with her husband, Karl Larsen, well known historian and author, who wrote many books about southern Utah. After Katherine's death, Karl continued to live there until his death in 1983, after which it passed to their daughter.

Dr. Mark Greene and his wife Barbara bought it from the Larson's daughter in 1984 and renovated it to meet their needs. The renovation included an elegant circular staircase of carved walnut they salvaged from a Salt Lake City house that was being demolished. An extra bathroom, kitchen, and dining room completed the master suite as renovated by the Greenes. They retained much of the original furniture which was included when the Greenes bought it. They added a pool in back and converted the pioneer granary into an art studio.

The Greene's son Richard owns the house now.
