BIOGRAPHY
Born April 28, 1861 in Bolligen, Canton Bern, Switzerland.He was baptized April 28, 1874 by Henry Riser and emigrated to Utah that same year, together with his father's family. The family was sent directly to St. George to help with the building of the temple there.
Gottlieb moved to New Harmony in the fall of 1878.
Married Amelia (aka Emilie) Neiderer of Toquerville on April 28, 1887 in St. George.
In 1894-1897, Gottlieb went on a mission to Switzerland.
After his return home, he served as Superintendent of the New Harmony Ward Sunday School and President of the YMMIA.
In 1902, Gottlieb was ordained a High Priest and set apart as First Counselor to Bishop William A Redd. He served in that capacity until March 12, 1905, when he was ordained a Bishop by Hyrum M. Smith and set apart to preside over the Harmony Ward. He was the Bishop from 1905, until being released on April 10, 1912.
Schmutz also filled several positions of secular nature, such as constable, school trustee, etc. His principal avocation was that of farmer and stock raiser.
Gottlieb died May 6, 1942 in St. George and was buried in the New Harmony Cemetery.
